Events & Festivals

Thai Poosam / தைப்பூசம்

Celebrated during the month of January or February. Thaipusam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually charged festivals celebrated by Tamil communities across the world. Every year, millions of devotees gather in temples and sacred sites to honor Lord Murugan — the divine warrior of wisdom, courage, and victory. More than just a festival, Thaipusam is a powerful expression of faith, sacrifice, and devotion, where hearts unite in prayer, music, and divine energy to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Goddess Parvati granted the divine spear known as the Vel to her son, Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), as an embodiment of her shakti (power). This weapon represents divine wisdom, the destruction of evil, and victory.

Panguni Uthiram / பங்குனி உத்திரம்

Celebrated during the month of March or April. Panguni Uthiram commemorates the weddings of Murugan (Kartikeya) and Devasena. It is celebrated on the confluence of Uttiram nakshatram on the purnima (full moon) of the month of Panguni.

Vaikasi Visakam / வைகாசி விசாகம்

Celebrated during the month of May or June. Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated as the birth of Lord Murugan, who is known as the God of courage, wealth, and wisdom, mainly celebrated by Tamil people all over the world.

Soora Samharam / சூரசம்ஹாரம்

Celebrated during the month of October or November. Soorasamharam, or Suranporu, is the dramatic,6th-day climax of the Skanda Sashti festival, marking Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Surapadman. Celebrated in Tamil Nadu and worldwide, it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, where Murugan uses his divine spear, the Vel, to destroy the demon’s ego.

Kantha Sashti / கந்த சஷ்டி

Celebrated during the months of November, December. Skanda Shasti, a significant festival in Hinduism, is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the God of war and victory. Celebrated by Saivites (followers of Lord Shiva), the festival commemorates Lord Murugan’s triumph over the demon Surapadman. The word “Shasti” means six. During these six days, devotees observe fasting and engage in prayers, seeking Lord Murugan’s blessings for victory in both material and spiritual challenges.

Thirukalyanam / திருக்கல்யாணம்

Celebrated during the month of October or November. The Thirukalyanam is the sacred divine wedding ceremony of Lord Murugan and Goddess Valli, a significant event celebrated, often following the Skanda Sashti / Soorasamharam festival. It symbolizes the union of the soul with the divine, specifically representing Murugan’s, or Kartikeya’s,, union with Iccha Shakti (power of will), represented by Valli.

Thiru Karthigai / திருக்கார்த்திகை

Celebrated during the month of December. It is a Hindu festival of lights mainly observed by Tamils and Tamil diaspora. It is celebrated on the first full moon day (purnima) of the Tamil calendar month of Karthigai coinciding with nakshatra of Kaṛttika. திருக்கார்த்திகை (கார்த்திகை தீபம்) என்பது தமிழ் மாதமான கார்த்திகையில், பௌர்ணமி மற்றும் கிருத்திகை நட்சத்திரம் சேரும் நாளில் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு முக்கியமான இந்து பண்டிகையாகும். இது தீய சக்திகளை அழித்து, ஒளியை (ஞானம்) போற்றும் வகையில் வீடுகளில் அகல் விளக்குகள் ஏற்றி, முருகப்பெருமான் மற்றும் சிவபெருமானை வழிபடும் விழாவாகும்.
